- Chapters: [[Psalm 19]] # Intro - [[Calvin and Hobbes]] was a very popular cartoon in the 80s and known for being funny and intellectual - There was some strip where they're looking at the stars and said something about how wonderful they are: "if people sat outside and looked at these every day, they would go about their lives differently" # v. 1-6: [[God]] makes glorious things - v. 1-2: [[David]] starts the psalm by having us look up and be amazed - The heavens can help one to understand [[God]]'s glory - [[God]]'s glory can be a bit difficult to pin down, much like the concept of beauty in general - Even in a city like [[London]], the sky is still visible - As you look in the sky, you understand a little bit of [[God]]'s glory (much like it takes seeing beautiful things to get an idea of the concept of beauty) - This is something even non-Christians can see, with e.g. astronomers admiring and discussing the amazingness of the cosmos - [[David]] then uses the sun to demonstrate [[God]]'s glory -- even the sun, the most glorious thing [[David]] can think of, is tucked in by [[God]] every night - How glorious it must be that the biggest things we can see and can think of (the sun and stars) are tiny to him # v.7-10: [[God]] writes a great book - Now we shift to discussing [[God]]'s law - Look at the words used: radiant, firm, righteous, etc - Is it any wonder that the same [[God]] that made the glorious things of the universe also wrote a great book? - Note also that this section uses "[[Lord]]" ([[Yahweh]]) as opposed to "[[God]]" - The sky is discussed with the general word for [[God]], and the law and the Word is discussed with his personal name - [[David]] says that [[Numbers]] is a joyful book (not something we normally think). And yet when we see that it's written by the same [[God]] who made the cosmos, how can we not - [[God]] has written a wonderful book, and so our response should be that we want to read it > [!NOTE] [[Daily Bread]] > [[All Souls Langham Place]] is now introducing a new daily [[Bible]] reading program over the next year # v.11-14: We should respond to it - v. 13: call to action - [[David]] goes from seeing [[God]] in creation, to seeing him in scripture, to directly talking to him in prayer - We should follow the same pattern: we read it, and then we are moved by it - e.g. [[David]] asks for forgiveness in v. 14 - It's through reading the [[Bible]] that he becomes conscious of his own sins in the first place - He sees through [[God]]'s law and meditating on it that he breaks it # Conclusion - So [[Calvin and Hobbes]] was right
