Perhaps named after *Sin*, a [[Mesopotamian]] [[Pagan]] moon goddess (unrelated to english word "Sin" meaning tresspass). Probably the same as [[Mount Horeb]], though they could be two separate peaks of the same mountain range in the area. With "Horeb" having a roughly "hot" meaning and [[Sinai]] having a roughly "lunar" meaning, some academics think these names come from an older [[Pagan]] tradition of sun and moon worship on these peaks. Evidence of moon-worshipping relics have been found in archeological digs of the modern [[Sinai]] region, and both mountain peaks of the [[Mount Sinai]] cluster have archaeological remains of large-scale [[Pagan]] worship in general [[Mount Sinai]] is the overall preferred name in the [[Bible]], though [[Mount Horeb]] is noteworthy for its use in [[Deuteronomy]] ![[Pasted image 20260118231031.png|https://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/a/28074]] Traditionally "[[Mount Sinai]]" is in the [[Sinai]] peninsula, though modern scholarship has put that under some dispute, with [[Jabal al-Lawz]] being a compelling alternate proposal. However, the name [[Sinai]] referring to the peninsula can be found in [[Egypt]]ian records dating back to 2000BC, and nowhere in [[Exodus 3]] or elsewhere does it say that the mountain is even in [[Midian]]! ![[Pasted image 20260118231927.png]]
