- Book: [[Exodus]]
- Previous chapter: [[Exodus 32]]
- Next chapter: [[Exodus 34]]
> [!summary] Summary
> - God tells [[Israel]] to go to [[Canaan]] but says he will not go with them — his holiness might destroy them on the way
> - [[Israel]] mourns; [[Moses]] intercedes persistently until God promises: "My Presence will go with you"
> - [[Moses]] asks to see God's glory; God agrees to show his goodness and proclaim his name, but not his face
> [!info] Why is this here?
> - The covenant has been broken; God's first response is to withdraw his presence — showing that presence is the point of the whole rescue
> - [[Moses]]' intercession is the most sustained in Exodus: he refuses to go without God's presence, because without it [[Israel]] is nothing special
> - The vision of God's glory prepares for [[Exodus 34]]'s revelation of God's character — the climax of the book's theological arc
# Overview
## v. 1-6: The threat: going without God's presence
- God commands departure to the [[Promised Land]] but says: "I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people"
- An angel will go instead — the land will be given, but not God's direct presence
- [[Israel]] mourns at this news and strips off their ornaments at [[Mount Horeb]]
> [!note] Presence is the prize
> God offers the land without his presence, and [[Israel]] rightly understands this as a catastrophic loss. The Exodus was never just about [[Canaan]] — it was about being brought to God himself. Land without God's presence is not the point.
## v. 7-11: The tent of meeting outside the camp
- [[Moses]] pitches a tent outside the camp where people can seek God (distinct from the later [[Tabernacle]] inside the camp)
- When [[Moses]] enters the tent, the pillar of cloud descends and stands at the entrance
- All the people stand and worship at their tent entrances
- "The Lord would speak to [[Moses]] face to face, as one speaks to a friend"
- [[Joshua]] does not leave the tent
## v. 12-17: [[Moses]]' persistent intercession
- [[Moses]] presses God: "You have said, 'Lead these people,' but you have not let me know who you will send with me"
- "If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you"
- God answers: "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest"
- [[Moses]]: "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here"
- "What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?"
- God agrees: "I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name"
## v. 18-23: "Show me your glory"
- [[Moses]] escalates: "Now show me your glory"
- God: "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name"
- "You cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live"
- [[Moses]] will be placed in a cleft of the rock and covered by God's hand as his glory passes; he will see God's back
