- Book: [[Exodus]]
- Previous chapter: [[Exodus 30]]
- Next chapter: [[Exodus 32]]
> [!summary] Summary
> - [[Bezalel]] and [[Oholiab]] are appointed master craftsmen, filled with the Spirit of God to execute all the [[Tabernacle]] work
> - The [[Sabbath]] is formally given to [[Israel]] as a covenant sign, with death as the penalty for violation
> - [[Moses]] receives the two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God
> [!info] Why is this here?
> - The Spirit filling [[Bezalel]] shows that God not only commanded the [[Tabernacle]] design but provides the human ability to build it — it is entirely his work
> - The [[Sabbath]] command inserted here links the [[Tabernacle]] and creation: building the sanctuary mirrors God resting after creating; the people must rest as they build
> - The tablets mark the completion of [[Moses]]' forty days on the mountain — and are about to be broken
# Overview
## v. 1-11: [[Bezalel]] and [[Oholiab]]
- God calls [[Bezalel]] by name and fills him with "the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills"
- [[Oholiab]] of [[Dan]] is appointed to assist
- Together with other skilled workers, they are to make everything God commanded — the tent, ark, furnishings, altar, courtyard, garments, anointing oil, incense
> [!note] Spirit-filled craftsman
> The filling of the Spirit is usually associated with prophecy or leadership in the Old Testament. Here it equips an artisan. God's Spirit is the source of the craftsmanship that will house his presence — no human skill is independent of divine gift.
## v. 12-17: The [[Sabbath]] as covenant sign
- "You must observe my [[Sabbath]]s. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come"
- Desecrating it brings death; doing any work on that day means being cut off
- "In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed"
- The [[Sabbath]] is a sign "between me and the [[Israelites]] forever"
## v. 18: The tablets received
- When God finished speaking, he gave [[Moses]] two tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God
- This concludes the [[Sinai]] discourse; the narrative now turns to crisis in the camp below
