- Book: [[Exodus]]
- Previous chapter: [[Exodus 19]]
- Next chapter: [[Exodus 21]]
> [!summary] Summary
> - [[Yahweh]] speaks the [[Ten Commandments]] directly to all [[Israel]] from the mountain
> - The people are terrified by God's presence and ask [[Moses]] to be their mediator
> - A brief altar law closes the chapter: no carved stones, no steps — keeping the focus on God's holiness
> [!info] Why is this here?
> - The [[Ten Commandments]] are the heart of the [[Sinai]] covenant — the direct word of God to his people defining how covenant life looks
> - The preamble ("I am the Lord your God who brought you out of [[Egypt]]") grounds the commands in redemption, not merit
> - The people's fear and request for a mediator explains why God speaks through [[Moses]] going forward, and anticipates the role of priests and ultimately [[Christ]]
# Overview
## v. 1-2: Preamble
- God identifies himself as the one who brought [[Israel]] out of [[Egypt]], out of slavery
- The commands flow from a redemptive relationship already established
## v. 3-17: The [[Ten Commandments]]
- No other gods before [[Yahweh]]
- No idols — God is jealous; punishes to 3rd/4th generation of haters; shows love to 1,000 generations of lovers
- Do not misuse the name of [[Yahweh]]
- Remember the [[Sabbath]] and keep it holy — grounded in creation rest
- Honor father and mother — linked to long life in the land
- Do not murder, commit adultery, steal, give false testimony, or covet
> [!note] Structure: vertical then horizontal
> The first four commands govern [[Israel]]'s relationship with God; the last six govern relationships with other people. [[Jesus]] will later summarize these as love God and love neighbor ([[Matt 22]]).
## v. 18-21: The people's response
- Thunder, lightning, smoke, and trumpet terrify the people; they stand at a distance
- "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die"
- [[Moses]] reassures them: "Do not be afraid — God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning"
- [[Moses]] alone approaches the thick darkness where God is
## v. 22-26: Altar law
- No gods of silver or gold alongside [[Yahweh]]
- Altar of earth or uncut stone; no dressed stones (a tool defiles it); no steps (modesty before God)
- Simple worship is the appropriate response to a holy God
